Fire Mitigation and Defensible Space

Protect your home from wildfire risk with professional, defensible space clearing.

Fire Mitigation

Wildfires are a real and growing risk in Southwest Colorado. If you live in or around Durango, Bayfield, or Ignacio, your property may already be in a high-risk zone — surrounded by ponderosa pine, scrub oak, and dry brush that can carry a fire straight to your door.

MC Landscape Services offers fire mitigation and defensible space services to help protect your home, your family, and your neighbors. We work with homeowners throughout La Plata County to assess property risk and clear vegetation in a way that slows fire spread and gives firefighters the best possible chance to defend your structure.

Defensible Space: What is it?

Defensible Space

Defensible space is a buffer zone around your home where vegetation has been managed to reduce the risk of fire spreading to structures on your property. Colorado recommends three zones:

Zone 1 — 0 to 30 Feet (Lean, Clean & Green)

This is the area immediately around your home. Vegetation here should be well-watered, low-growing, and widely spaced: remove dead plants, dry leaves, wood piles, and trim any branches that hang over the roof.

Zone 2 — 30 to 100 Feet (Reduced Fuel)

Further from the house, the goal is to break up the continuity of vegetation so fire can't easily travel. We remove even more dead material, thin trees, and create spacing between shrubs and tree canopies so that fire risk is mitigated while you can still enjoy your property.

Zone 3 — Beyond 100 Feet (Outer Perimeter)

On larger properties, we can continue thinning and clearing to extend your protection zone and reduce overall fuel load - keeping fire risk to a minimum is our biggest concern.
